Beerwah police officers lose their hair for a worthy cause
Constable Natasha Selwood hopes the old adage about there being only a week between a bad haircut and a good one rings true in her case.
Yesterday she put her locks on the line to raise funds in support of children living with cancer and other serious illnesses as part of the annual Bluey Day fundraising campaign.
Constable Selwood and her boss from the Beerwah station, Senior Sergeant Ken Otte, had their heads shaved at Australia Zoo, raising more than $3000 in the process.
The 31-year-old said not only was she please to have been able to “support the kids”, she was also now a pigeon pair with the Mum Julie who has lost her hair due to chemotherapy treatment during her own battle with cancer.
Constable Selwood, who admitted more than two hours after the shave that she still “hadn’t been game to look in the mirror”, also thanked Australia Zoo for hosting the fundraising, with $2000 contributed to the effort by auctioning a framed and autographed Steve Irwin khaki uniform.
Bluey Day started in 1995 and involves not only police, but also other members of the emergency services such as firemen and ambulance officers.
Numerous members of each of the services will travel to Brisbane on August 14 to take part in what will be the biggest shave for a cause in the State.
Constable Selwood said she would definitely be involved in the fundraising again next year, but wasn’t so sure about whether she would put her hand up for another head shave.
