Bindi and the Crocmen

Wooo-hoo! The biggest star in the conservation world made her global entertainment debut during Easter 2006 at the Animal Planet Crocoseum! Steve and Terri Irwin’s very own Bindi, a seven-year-old blonde dynamo with plenty of spark, sang and danced her way into the hearts of thousands during the Easter school holidays, accompanied by her awesome Crocmen. This energetic and action-packed performance occurred twice a day over Easter, with Steve and Terri providing plenty of moral support – and even offering their services as back-up dancers (an offer respectfully declined by Bindi). We hope this awesome star and her band of merry Crocmen will come back again to rock our socks in the Crocoseum!

Easter 2006 Death Roll Tally

What an incredible Easter long weekend! Once again, our massive Saltwater Crocodiles were going OFF… April’s cooling weather did nothing to cool their natural instincts as Steve brought out their wild side every day in the Animal Planet Crocoseum. Steve, Terri and Wes drew HUGE crowds every day, and our thousands of guests just loved the action-packed, entertaining and educational CrocsLIVE shows. Check out the number of death rolls each crocodile did in their attempts to get the ‘big piece of meat’ (i.e. Steve).

The Namgyal Monks of Tibet

During February 2006, Australia Zoo was proud to host the four Namgyal Monks of Tibet, personally chosen by the Dalai Lama to travel the world promoting the Year of Tibet. The monks created a beautiful sand mandala in the Zoo, which they then dismantled and used to bless the Zoo and its conservation works. For the week during their stay, the monks meditated each morning in the Animal Planet Crocoseum, inviting Australia Zoo staff and visitors to join them for this special experience. What an honour!

Bindi's Birthday

Bindi's seventh birthday celebrations went off in the Crocoseum! Wooo-hoo!

Imagine the world's foremost wildlife arena, packed to the brim with thousands of people roaring their approval of the most unreal animal show on earth. Australia Zoo pulled out all the stops for our very own Bindi Irwin on her special day, July 24th. Not only were there the usual snakes, tigers, birds and crocodiles doing their thing... we also had everyone's favourite green ogre, SHREK! The Shrek 2 Live show is currently the world's most popular children's live entertainment, and we were stoked to have Shrek and his pals, Donkey and Puss in Boots, smack-bang in the middle of crocodile territory.

Our guests loved the show, too! We had record crowds for Bindi’s big day, and they all went ballistic in the Animal Planet Crocoseum.

December 2003 - The Crocoseum Dream is finally realised and ready to open to the public

The Animal Planet Crocoseum is the fulfilment of one of Steve Irwin's lifelong dreams. Steve wanted to provide the visitors to Australia Zoo with the opportunity to see crocodiles in clearwater ponds. This idea was to help educate the public by showing them how crocodiles live and behave in the wild.

Crocodiles use the murkiness of the water in their territory to camouflage from their prey. By using clear water, we can highlight to you the dangers that can be lurking just below the surface of a seemingly serene billabong.

Steve's dream was to be able to use an intricate system of channels and gates to allow him to house several male Saltwater Crocodiles alongside each other in private enclosures, and bring them individually out into the centre of the Animal Planet Crocoseum for our crocodile shows.

Not only did he disprove his critics, who said "It just CAN'T be done," he has provided Australia Zoo with the perfect arena to display some of the most beautiful animals on the face of the earth. This includes not just our crocs, but animals such as our Bengal and Sumatran Tigers, snakes and one of the most amazing free-flight bird shows you will ever see.

Overall, the construction team took almost eleven months to complete the mammoth task. They spent weeks bringing in nearly 7000 cubic metres of dirt to level the building site! Crikey! That is a lot of dirt
