![]() While Australia Zoo is known world wide for paving the way in conservation, Steve and Terri's efforts do not just stop there. Not only are they true wildlife warriors, they are constantly being recognized by the charitable work that they take part in daily. Australia Zoo actively supports many organisations both large and small from all over the world.Every week we receive hundreds of requests to support these organisations, and we are more than happy to lend a helping hand. In one year alone, Australia Zoo donated in total over $100,000 worth of merchandise and passes to about 2000 organisations to assist with their fundraising efforts. These range from small sporting and special interest clubs, kindergartens, schools and churches to national and global organisations such as the Leukemia Foundation, Queensland Cancer Fund, Starlight Children's Foundation and the Red Cross. Whilst a majority of these clubs and organisations are based in the local area and Australia, we have helped groups as widely dispersed as the United States, Europe, New Zealand and even Fiji! |

Our dedicated team at Australia Zoo is always willing to provide their community with support. Our staff peruse magazines, newspapers, television programs and radio announcements everyday in search of ways we can help individuals or groups in our community in need of assistance. One of our latest donations was to a local family in need after a tragic loss. The appeal for the family raised over $40,000 in goods and services from the local community! Wow, what an effort! Royal Brisbane Children's Hospital (Began 2002) Each year the Royal Children's Hospital's dedicated team of medical staff treat 88,000 sick and injured kids from all over the world. Thousands of these little patients rely on the Royal Children's Hospital each year for treatment for serious illnesses and injuries. In turn they rely on generous supporters such as Australia Zoo who help with their fundraising efforts so they can provide lifesaving equipment and funds for vital research to continue giving the kids the best care on their road to recovery. In June 2002 the Australia Zoo team went to Brisbane to help out with the 'Working Wonders Kids Day Out' fundraising event. The kids and their families were entertained by the Australia Zoo team, who brought along with them a python and performed exciting Snake shows throughout the day in the 2700 seat piazza. Another activity, with the help of our fun loving BW Croc mascot, is monthly visits to the Royal Brisbane's Children's Hospital. Our main goal is to have fun and bring a smile to every child's face, and that is exactly what we do. Upon our visit, we hand out many giveaways; including everything from hugs and smiles to jokes on the in-house rainbow radio plus heaps more. For the children that are unable to leave their room, BW will make a special visit to their bed as well. There is plenty of fun to be had, and that is just the start! We also regularly hold 'Australia Zoo week' at the hospital with an exciting Australia Zoo activity to do every day of the week! Save the Grey Nurse Shark During the month of February Australia Zoo raised needed funds to help save the misunderstood Grey Nurse Shark. The Grey Nurse Shark, on the eastern coast of Australia is on the brink of extinction. The total number of grey nurse sharks left on the East Coast of Australia is estimated to be less than 500 individuals. On Valentines Day, Australia Zoo donated $1 from every admission to this worthy cause to help the Marine Parks and Wildlife and the Wildlife Protection Association with their fundraising efforts. We also auctioned off an original oil painting of Steve Irwin 'The Crocodile Hunter' with a Grey Nurse Shark complete with a special message and autograph from the Crocodile Hunter himself. This painting was taken from a still photograph out of "The Crocodile Hunter" documentary series and captured Steve's awestruck expression at being so close to this amazing creature. The money received from the auction was also donated to help the Grey Nurse Sharks. Red Cross Mobile Blood Donation: (Began Oct 2001) Every Halloween we host the Red Cross Mobile Blood Bank at Australia Zoo to aid in the collection of much needed blood donations. For every customer donating blood to the Red Cross, Australia Zoo kindly offered discounted admission and a buffet of food to feast upon. Even our staff were happy to take a break from work to give blood! With the ever increasing demand for blood stocks, Australia Zoo's efforts are always greatly appreciated. Leukemia Foundation: (Began 1999) Twenty years ago, patients diagnosed with Leukemia faced a slim chance of survival. Today, thanks to medical research and breakthrough treatments, around seven in every 10 children, and three in every 10 adults survive acute Leukemia after treatment. To continue the medical research and assist families, every year Australia Zoo joins the Leukemia Foundation on St Patrick's Day, and hosts 'Shave for a Cure'. Patrons and staff are invited to either colour their hair or shave their lovely locks off for this wonderful cause. All money raised on the day at Australia Zoo is donated to the Leukemia Foundation to assist them with their worthwhile efforts. East Timor With the assistance of the Australian Defence Force, Australia Zoo has sent hundreds of school supplies to the children affected by the war in East Timor. Many of the children who suffered a parental loss, personal injury and as a result ended up in orphanages or in deep poverty were the receivers of the zoos donations to assist them on track to a better life of learning. Most recently in 2004, we assisted with a program to send hats and pens to children still living in the war torn Timor. These children had no play toys or momentous joy of being children. Australia Zoo's humanitarian efforts were really appreciated by the local children. Click here to read the letter of thanks that Australia Zoo received.
